Custom Packaging - Things to save you from the headache and the heartache…
In today’s competitive and fast paced world it’s a bumpy roller coaster of a ride navigating your way through the business of custom packaging and for many first timers it can be overwhelming and a bit of a let-down in the end.
You start off with amazing ideas, ready to stamp you own style on everything big enough to fit branding on and before the day is done you’ve got Mick Jagger in your head singing “you can’t always get what you want”. This is where Star Packaging Solutions can help save you from the headache!
Branding IS A MUST!!
The first thing that you need to know though is that despite any hurdles you initially come across, branding is essential. We live in a world that is saturated with marketing messages and as much as you wish your business was wholly and solely a stand-out in the market, it’s more likely that you’re constantly competing with more than a handful of businesses offering exactly the same thing as you, right next door.
What that means is that you have to do what you can to build brand equity and branding on your packaging can be what gains instant recognition and resonance with your audience.
There’s endless ways to make it your own
Custom packaging is great way to showcase your brand and it can be very exciting seeing it come to life!
It’s a fantastic form of advertising and investing the time and money in your packaging can elevate the look and feel of your whole business to a new level. Also it helps you to keep up with trends and show yourself as contemporary in the market.
You go to so much effort to make your products amazing, so why would you then put it in plain or bland packaging? It’s like putting your Lamborghini engine in the body of a Toyota Corolla, you might be selling your product short.
There are also some great economical ways to get around minimum order quantities (MOQ’s) if that’s your concern including using stickers, tags, stamps, ribbon and more, to display your branding and bring the funk to your establishment. It may not look as polished as if it was printed but it can be a great place to start if your business is new or you’re testing our new concepts or products.
A trap that some more established businesses can fall into is trying to perform the distributor by-pass and importing direct from international manufacturers themselves.
The issues begin with selecting a manufacturer, making sure they are reputable both socially and environmentally. The ABC had a field day with a number of big retailers in 2013 who had reportedly used manufacturers that failed to meet international standards for wages and conditions. With the blessing/curse of social media these days, bad publicity can spread like wildfire.
The other smouldering issue is that even if you conquer the system by getting a seemingly red-hot price, you’re also then responsible for the management of quality issues, manufacturing errors, shipping details, colouring mishaps and any other inconsistencies that can be lurking beneath the surface.
You also won’t think it’s so great when you find yourself parking your car in the street because your garage now has 500,000 coffee cups filling it. The best advice I can give is to leave this to the professionals as that will give you a buffer often both financially and managerially.
Time is money so you’ll pretty much always find you’re be better off letting Star Packaging Solutions do the legwork!!
Time is not on your side
Speaking of time, a lot of businesses can underestimate their project timing with packaging and can discover pretty quickly that 6 weeks before Christmas you might have oodles of time to shop around and get your presents for your dear Nanna but when it comes to custom packaging, 6 weeks out is the equivalent of asking for miracle at 11pm on Christmas Eve.
Custom packaging projects can take up to 6 months from the design and consultation stage to the ordering of printing plates and cutting formes and the manufacture and shipping of the final product. If it’s being manufactured overseas you can expect it to take 12 to 14 weeks to arrive once you place your order.
You might opt for the convenience of having products manufactured locally instead however it’s likely to still take 4 to 6 weeks at best.
This means you need to be prepared well in advance and set deadlines with your own team. You can also ask your supplier to create a calendar of deadlines for you for the project based on manufacturing lead times. If they’re a good supplier they’ll be creating one for themselves anyway!
Basically it comes down to the old saying: “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.
Who ya gonna call?.......no not the Ghostbusters
