In today’s competitive and fast paced world, it’s a bumpy roller coaster of a ride navigating your way through the business of custom packaging and for many first timers, it can be overwhelming and a bit of a let-down in the end.

The other smouldering issue is that even if you conquer the system by getting a seemingly red-hot price, you’re also then responsible for the management of quality issues, manufacturing errors, shipping details, colouring mishaps and any other inconsistencies that can be lurking beneath the surface.

You also won’t think it’s so great when you find yourself parking your car in the street because your garage now has 500,000 coffee cups filling it. The best advice I can give is to leave this to the professionals as that will give you a buffer often both financially and managerially.

Time is not on your side

Speaking of time, a lot of businesses can underestimate their project timing with packaging and can discover pretty quickly that 6 weeks before Christmas you might have oodles of time to shop around and get your presents for your dear Nanna but when it comes to custom packaging, 6 weeks out is the equivalent of asking for miracle at 11pm on Christmas Eve.

Custom packaging projects can take up to 6 months from the design and consultation stage to the ordering of printing plates and cutting formes and the manufacture and shipping of the final product. If it’s being manufactured overseas you can expect it to take 12 to 14 weeks to arrive once you place your order.

You might opt for the convenience of having products manufactured locally instead however it’s likely to still take 4 to 6 weeks at best.

This means you need to be prepared well in advance and set deadlines with your own team. You can also ask your supplier to create a calendar of deadlines for you for the project based on manufacturing lead times. If they’re a good supplier they’ll be creating one for themselves anyway!

Basically it comes down to the old saying: “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.
